Setup gamble leads to hardship for Varco at September Divisional Rounds 9 & 10

05 September, 2022

(Bakersfield, CA) The CalClub Regional SCCA Rounds 9 & 10 were hosted this weekend at Buttonwillow Raceway Park. 15 strong contestants lined the Spec Miata class. The usual suspects, Evan Jacobs, Clement Lee, David Varco, Austin Varco and Jeremy Rutter stacked the top 4 in qualifying. The race weekend saw the running of an unusual counter-clockwise layout. “We want the car to turn left really well this weekend, so we’ve done a lot with what we can. It’ll either pay off big, or be an epic failure.” said Austin Varco, running the #121 SM. Visually, Varco’s car looks like a NASCAR with loads of negative camber on the right side.

Racecar driver Austin Varco

Unfortunately for Austin, the gamble didn’t pay off. David Varco, Jacobs, and Rutter had a great battle for first position with Rutter stealing the win on Saturday. Austin Varco, battling to stay in the top-5. Undoing the wild setup, Varco was too-little too-late, and finished fourth on Sunday.
